EXPENSES
Financial Literacy Education in the Class
How much do I need to earn to cover all my expenses, to save and to pay off debts? Do I have enough reserves for unexpected emergencies, sharp price increases in everyday expenses such as gasoline or food, for times of illness or perhaps even for a temporary job loss?
A sufficient, reliable income to cover all costs and enough liquid savings for emergencies or sensible investments are crucial to maintaining financial freedom and making smart economic decisions without emotional pressure.
With this teaching material we like to provide you classroom-tested learning concepts for conducting real-life-oriented, age-appropriate and sustainable workshops when it comes to financial literacy education in the classroom.

Financial Literacy Education in the Class
What do I spend money on? What is important to me when buying a product? Do I buy spontaneously or planned? How do I pay? How does the advertising work and how does it influence me? What is the story, the message? What information do I disclose about myself on the Internet?
In an information-flooded and consumer-oriented environment, one should recognize one's own purchasing behavior and the drives from within (desire) and from outside (advertising, group) in order to be able to make better economically sensible and self-determined consumption decisions.

Budget + Financial Options
Financial Literacy Education in the Class
What is the current financial situation? Is there anything left over each month? Can I save? Are there any existing debts? Am I over-indebted? Do I have liquid reserves? Is there an urgent need for economic action? What options do I have?
Many families today often lack an accurate overview of their current financial situation. The actual financial situation is unclear, necessary actions are overseen, possible options for appropriate economic solutions and interventions remain hidden. Based on the workshops on the topics of expenditure, income and consumption + advertising, the students should examine different financial situations in various case studies. The solutions found should be presented to the class.
This teaching material with its 4 case studies is intended to give teachers ideas and support them in conducting a real-life-oriented, age-appropriate and sustainable workshop (90 min) on the topic of budget+financial options as part of basic financial education for everyday life.
Play&Learn
Financial Basics
Financial Literacy Education in the Class
If you want to learn to swim, you don't need to read a book, do you? A few short verbal instructions and a clear demonstration are enough to start with the first swimming movements; then you simply practice and improve under supervision, gain experience and develop self-confidence; first in shallow water, later in a lake or even in the sea.
When we speak about basic financial education and the sensible handling of private finances, the mere provision of information is of little use. Necessary skills arise and develop through a real-life oriented application of what has been learned, through experiencing and reflecting on what works and what doesn't, through an overview and assessment of a possible development, simply through trying things out and being allowed to make mistakes.
This teaching material could help to set real-life-oriented and motivating framework conditions. They are created to demonstrate financial requirements of a private household, to make them tangible, to develop solutions in the group, to strengthen essential problem-solving and communication skills, to try out real-life situations in the game without using real money.
Basic financial education in school is crucial for a self-determined and sustainable lifestyle in life and should be relevant to everyday life.
Play+Learn Financial Basics in school, this is the way and the goal for this workshop and for the teaching material provided.
Pocket Money Management
... the story
In this short video (new published on YouTube in 2024), I would like to share some of my first experiences of teaching financial education to young adults in 2007 and why I had to find an approach to reach and inspire the workshop participants, age-appropriate, real-life-oriented and sustainable.
Hope you enjoy and share.
Pocket Money Management
Playing = Practice for real life!
This book will help teachers to conduct a workshop for Financial Literacy education with the board game Hamsterrad in the class!
It is mainly geared toward grades 8 - 10 (students aged 13 - 16). The workshop is activity and practice-oriented thanks to a board game called Hamsterrad (Hamster Wheel). The game ranked among Germany's best educational games in 2011. Pocket Money Management contains detailed descriptions on preparation, implementation and follow-up of the workshops. A great many challenging exercises, examples and suggestions help the teacher to plan practical, age-appropriate lessons in consumer education.
